Project
Impact and Adoption Study of Stepwise Climate Smart Agriculture Practices in the Coffee Sector in Uganda
Client
GOPA Worldwide Consultants/ GIZ Fund for Agriculture Research
Duration
January 2022 - July 2024
As climate change increasingly impacts coffee production, adaptation measures become essential. This study investigates the Stepwise training approach, consisting of four climate-smart steps that promise to be yield-increasing. Coffee farmers are to leverage the income gained from the previous step to facilitate the next, ultimately completing the entire set of site-specific farming practices. We collected quantitative and qualitative data on 915 coffee farmers in two regions of Uganda and employed an ex-post quasi-experimental approach to analyse the adoption of Stepwise amongst treated-, spillover-, and comparison groups and the impact on yield, income, sales, price, poverty and food and nutrition security. This research project is carried out by GOPA Worldwide Consultants on behalf of the Fund International Agriculture Research (FIA) in collaboration with the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture.
